About Show The Steps

Every step, written out.

A free website that works math problems the way a good teacher does on the board: one move at a time, with the reason for each move and a picture beside it.

What it is

Type in a problem, like 47 + 38, 3x + 2 = 11 or a 95% confidence interval, and the matching helper shows how it's done. Each helper covers one topic, from place value and long division through fractions, algebra, geometry and trigonometry to calculus, college statistics and matrices. See all the topics.

Every helper can also:

Who it's for

Students, from the early grades through a first-year college course, checking homework or learning a method. Parents who want to help with math that's taught differently than they remember. Teachers, who can make worksheets with answer keys, share practice sets as a link or QR code, read class results, print reference sheets, and give the class a problem of the day.

Free, and staying that way

How the answers are checked

Every helper works with exact fractions rather than rounded decimals wherever an answer should be exact, and every answer is checked a second way at the end, such as multiplying back or substituting in. The site also has a self-test of more than 22,000 checks: it opens every helper, works problems with known answers, tries right and wrong answers in Check my answer, and re-works thousands of practice problems independently. It runs before changes go live, and anyone can run it in a browser.

Found a wrong answer anyway? Please report it with the link to the problem, and it will be fixed.
