Privacy

Your work stays with you.

No accounts, no ads and no cookies. Here is exactly what Show The Steps keeps, where, and what (little) is sent anywhere.

The short version: every problem is worked out in your own browser, and nothing you type is sent to anyone. Your progress and settings are saved only on your device. The site counts visits anonymously, without cookies. It collects no personal information from anyone, including children, so there is no student data to share or sell.

What stays on your device

The site saves a few things in your browser's local storage, so they're still there next time. They never leave the device:

WhatWhy
SettingsLight or dark theme, text size, the read-aloud voice and speed, and whether the math keypad shows.
Each helper's last problemSo a page opens where you left it.
Recent problemsThe Recent list at the top of each page.
Your progressWhat you've practiced and which mistakes to revisit, shown on Your progress.
Problem of the dayYour streak, and which days you've done.
Flash cards, practice sets, worksheetsHow well you know each card, a practice set in progress, and the worksheet maker's choices.
Class resultsOnly if a teacher chooses to keep pasted results on their own device.

To delete it: Your progress has a Clear my progress button, and clearing this site's data in your browser's settings removes everything. If you install the site as an app, your browser also keeps a copy of the pages so they work offline; removing the app or clearing site data deletes that too.

What is sent, and to whom

ServiceWhat it gets
GoatCounter
visit counts
Each page view: the page's address without the problem in it (so what you typed is never included), the site you came from, your screen size, and your browser and operating system. GoatCounter works out the country from your IP address and then discards the address. No cookies, and nothing that identifies you. GoatCounter's privacy policy.
Google Fonts
the lettering
Your browser downloads the site's fonts from Google's servers, which see your IP address like any download. Google says it doesn't set cookies for this or use it to build profiles. Google Fonts privacy.
GitHub Pages
the hosting
The site is served by GitHub, which may log visitors' IP addresses for security. GitHub's privacy statement.

Nothing else is sent. In particular:
