Sequences, worked out

The Number Staircase

A sequence is a list of numbers that follows a rule. Spot the rule, climb to any step with the nth-term formula, check whether a number is on the staircase, add up a series (even one that goes on forever), read sigma notation, and set up word problems — with the reason for every step.

Say it out loud

Every number is worked out exactly, so 340 and (2/3)12 come out to the last digit. Plot the terms on the Graph Paper; brush up on powers at the Power Tower, or solve for n on the Balance Scale.
