Math at work · machining and welding, worked out

The Machine Shop

The math at the lathe, the mill and the welding booth, one step at a time: spindle speed and feed rate, tap drills and threads, tapers, bolt circles, sine bars, what a piece of steel weighs, weld heat input and filler metal, and tolerances and fits. Right triangles on their own are on the Unit Circle, plain unit changes on the Measuring Tape.

For learning and shop practice. Speeds, feeds and densities here are typical numbers for working the math. On a real job, follow the tool maker’s speeds and feeds, the drawing’s tolerances and your welding procedure specification (WPS), and wear your safety glasses.

Decimals you type are kept exact; where a number is rounded (RPM to a whole number, sizes to 0.0001 inch), the step says so.
