Counting, worked out

The Counting Tree

How many ways? Multiply the choices with the counting principle, put things in order (arrangements, nPr), choose groups where order doesn’t matter (combinations, nCr), arrange the letters of a word, count handshakes, games and diagonals, and work out factorials — with a tree, slots or a picture, and the reason for every step.

The work

Say it out loud

Every count is worked out exactly, to the last digit. For the chance of something happening, use the Chance Spinner; to simplify a fraction, use the Fraction Bar; powers like 210 are on the Power Tower.
